#SSNC ~ Zico Leong

Kuching - Top Spot ( 29/08/2013 )

I flew with Zico recently after having not seen him in a while. The last time we met was at the Malaysia Airlines Biannual Track & Field Athletics meet, where I watched him compete. He is quite the athlete. In 2011 he was the Silver Medalist for the 110m Hurdles. That is his pet event!

Stadium Kelana Jaya, PJ

For your information, Zico is multi talented. Not many knows that as a young man growing up in Ranau Sabah, that he loved Karate and in the year 2000, he won the Bronze medal at the State Level.

The most meaningful achievement of his life so far, is when he was presented with the ' Sijil Penghargaan ' by the highest ranking officer from the Red Crescent Society for his involvement in helping out during a natural disaster, in Keningau, Sabah. ( Storm Greg hits Borneo | borneopedia.com ) Plenty lost their homes and lives. Being there and witnessing all this was a truly humbling experience for him.
During College days, he was very active in the cultural society. On one occasion, he choreographed a couple of performances for his mates and they got to perform the Zapin Johor & the Sumazau dance at MATIC. ( Malaysia Tourism Centre ).
As a Sino-Murut growing up in Ranau, he spent most of his days at his aunt's bridal shop. At the age of 15, he was already assisting his aunt with some of the wedding preparations and make up. What he enjoyed most however, was setting up the bride's hair. This has led him to now, become one of the committee member's, for Klang Valley, in the yearly Kaamatan Festival ( Kaamatan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).

                                                    Zico & his beautiful cousins...

* He speaks very good Malay and when I asked, " how come? " He sheepishly replied that one of his hobbies is collecting Malay comics since young. So I couldn't resist and made him tell me what was his all time favourite Malaysian Cartoon..and can you believe it? It is The Keluang Man!

I asked Zico what does Merdeka means to him? He ended up telling me a heart warming story about his experience recently as a flight crew. During the 2013 Lahad Datu standoff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, he was one of them assigned to operate a few flights sending the armed personnel (Polis Hutan) from Kuching, Miri and Sibu into Tawau. He felt extremely sad when one of the officers who approached him during the flight to take a picture with him said this, " May I have a picture with you? " and Zico jokingly asked, " Why? I am not that handsome. " To which the officer replied, " because you might be the last person I see, for I don't know if I'll ever come back alive or dead. " I then went on to ask Zico whether he was worried or afraid to have had to operate such a flight. Zico instead told me that it was one of his proudest moments to have been able to serve the country in such a meaningful way and that he had full confidence of the special forces abilities to protect us, thus he felt safe. He also told me that they were one of the best passengers to serve. The most polite and disciplined people he has ever met!

So, what do you think is his favourite Malaysian singer & song?

Merdeka by Sudirman ;)
